Mixing is the process of combining separate audio tracks into one finished piece. A recording session often leaves each instrument, voice, and effect on its own track, and the mix is where those tracks are balanced, placed, and shaped so the whole sounds intentional rather than crowded.
The mix as summing tracks
At its core, mixing is summing: the samples of every track are added together to produce the final signal. Everything else, adjusting levels, panning sounds left or right, shaping tone, is about controlling that sum so that no single element overwhelms the others and each can be heard where it matters.
Gain staging: sensible levels at every stage
Gain staging is the discipline of keeping audio levels in a sensible range through each step of the signal path. Every tool a signal passes through, a plugin, a bus, the final output, has a range where it behaves cleanly. When levels are kept reasonable at each stage, the sum stays predictable and nothing overloads quietly in the middle of the chain.
Headroom and clipping
Digital audio has a hard ceiling: 0 dBFS, or digital full scale, the loudest value a sample can hold. Levels above it cannot be represented and get clipped flat, which sounds harsh and broken. Headroom is the distance kept between the working level and that ceiling. Leaving a few decibels of headroom through the mix means peaks stay intact and the master has room to breathe before final loudness is set.
Meters and decibels
Meters are the mix engineer's instrument panel. They display levels in decibels, a logarithmic unit that matches how ears perceive loudness, so a meter gives a fair picture of what the listener will experience. Watching meters at each stage is how gain staging problems are found before they become audible.
Normalization versus manual levels
Normalization automatically scales a signal so its loudest peak reaches a chosen level. It is a mechanical, whole-file adjustment, not a mix decision. Manual level setting, by contrast, balances the musical relationship between elements. Normalization is useful for consistency across finished files; the balance of a mix is still a human judgment made track by track.
None of this requires expensive gear. The concepts, summing, gain staging, headroom, clipping, and metering, apply in any audio software, and understanding them is what separates a controlled mix from a loud one.
